2017 WFD Appreciation Dinner

 

The Weaverville Fire Protection District hosted its annual Appreciation Dinner for the Weaverville Volunteer Firefighters on Friday February 3rd.  Firefighters and Support Services were honored for the hundreds of hours donated throughout the year protecting and serving the Community of Weaverville. This year Weaverville Firefighters responded to 499 calls for service, spent countless hours doing community service and attended thousands of hours of training. Highlights of the evening included a social hour, longevity awards, and Department awards.

 

Larry Horrocks received the “Firefighter of the Year” award for 2016.  During the year Larry responded to 188 calls, was ‘on-call’ 87 times and attended over 173 hours of training.  Larry is a Certified First Responder and this year he was promoted to Engineer. Larry is the owner/operator of Mountain Valley Floors and spends countless hours at the Fire Station helping to clean and organize the equipment when he is not running his business.

 

Jon Geir was presented with “Responder of the Year” for 2016.  During the past year Jon responded to 245 calls, attended approximately 215 hours of Department training and assisted with several community service projects including teaching fire safety at the elementary school.  Jon works with our Hazard Reduction Crew and is the Sleeper at Station One.

 

The highlight of the ceremony was presenting Larry Brown with a plaque honoring his 30 years of dedication and service to the Fire Department. Larry started as a Junior, with the Department in 1985, and was voted into membership in 1986. He has held many titles though out the years including Assistant Chief, Engineer, and EMT. Larry works full-time at Trinity River Lumber Mill and currently holds the position of Captain on the Fire Department. Larry responded to 83 emergency calls last year, was ‘on-call’ 61 times and completed approximately 113 hours of training.

 

The evening was emceed by Todd Corbett. Todd was just recently promoted to the full-time position of Fire Chief for the Weaverville Fire Protection District. Todd has 13 years of service as a Volunteer with the Department. He worked full-time at Trinity Hospital during 2016 and responded to 153 emergency calls, covered “on-call” for 75 nights and has over 175 hours of training.

 

Years-of-Service awards were presented to seven people. Jon Geir, Jordan Hamilton, Brad Straatmann and Commissioner Dee Potter were recognized for 5 years of service. Keith Heryford, Commissioner Larry Helsley, and Commissioner Bill Britton were recognized for 15 years of service. Each of these members were presented with a specially fabricated belt buckle with the beloved hand pumper depicted on the front of the buckle and the years of service recognized.
